La Olla Fireworks in Altea

On the closest Saturday to the 10th of August the amazing and incredible La Olla Fireworks in Altea take place on the beach front in La Olla just by the Big Hotel before the motorway turn off. The Castell de l'Olla (also known as "Castillo de la Olla"), is celebrated in honor of San Lorenzo near to the 10th August as possible but always on a Saturday.

This Festive scenario has spanned more than 3 decades and is now somewhat of an Institution and is a celebration and a tribute to the Alteano Pyro-technician Blas Azna, affectionately known as “el tío Blai, el coheter”, who sadly passed away a few years ago. In his memory, a special fireworks display began and since then this celebration has grown into the magnificent display that we have seen over the last 30 years.

Be aware of the traffic and…¡enjoy!

Be warned if you are considering travelling anywhere or visiting the surrounding beaches for the Celebrations. As Real Estate in Altea, we know that the traffic gets intense sometimes. Think twice, the traffic and queues can, have and will be horrendous from 19.00 onwards as people bustle (between 50-60,000 are estimated to arrive) and if you have been along the N332 from Altea to La Olla during these festivities you will know that  they position “beautiful red shiny cones” along the pavements, to prevent the hundreds of cars who used to park there, from doing so.

This event, the Castell de L’Olla, is a spectacular event known for its beauty and charm and Loud bangs too, so if you have any dogs or cats and they are particularly nervous don’t leave them unattended and if they are really bad it’s not worth the stress for the animal.

This impressive display of fireworks are launched from platforms that are loaded with literally hundreds of mortar type fireworks and are towed into the sea creating a unique combination of colours, lights and reflections on the water as well as the sky.

These days the fireworks are synchronized with music and have specific choreography, which adds a special touch to the show and makes it an unforgettable experience for anyone watching it. You will also note the Armada of sea craft which arrive in the bay although are kept out of harm’s way by Police and Guardia Civil.

One of the most relevant novelties this year is the change of pyro technician. Although the “Castell de L'Olla Brotherhood” continues to be in charge of the display, the position of Pepe "Barranquí", who sadly died in February 2022, will be filled by the new generations of the Brotherhood.
