Mother’s day: a perfect day for her in Costa Blanca

The purpose of the article today is to report on an amazingly important and very special day tomorrow to enjoy in Costa Blanca. It’s Mother's Day in Spain also known as “Día de la Madre” and is celebrated on the first Sunday of May each year. In the past, it took place on December 8th every year until it was moved to “Spring” in 1965. (Being a predominantly Catholic Country this was partly to disassociate the secular mother's celebrations from the Catholic holiday of the Immaculate Conception.)

Mother’s day is not a “Public Holiday” in Spain. However Sundays generally tend to be pretty quiet in most Spanish towns and cities so some preparation is required to organize your flowers and gifts for your beloved Mum and of course many stores will offer “special deals” on gifts in the weeks leading up to the day (in more normal circumstances.)

Mother's Day in Spain mostly coincides with the Mayday or Labor Day Festivities on May 1, which is a public holiday. If public holidays like Labor Day fall on a Friday or a Monday, Spanish people will often take the whole weekend off, and if it falls on a Thursday or a Tuesday, a lot of businesses will also close for the Friday or the Monday as well to give themselves an extra-long weekend (this is known as a “Puente”, or bridge).

On some occasions, when a public holiday falls on a Wednesday, people will take the days before or after it for a "Super Puente", which may involve a trip to the coast or time away. All work and no play, etc.

Get her something special and enjoy the Costa Blanca

So what do you buy “The Mother who has Everything”. The usual gifts of flowers or candies are common in Spain, and some families exchange cards as well although Spain does not have the same card-giving culture that is more popular in English-speaking countries and therefore sourcing them can be quite difficult and often quite expensive.

Most importantly, tell your Mother how much you Love her and “what she means to you”.

You may want to buy your Mother a “regalo” (or gift) some “flores”. And even greet her with “Feliz Dia de la Madre”, “Happy Mother's Day” and a warm embrace! But whatever you do, Make her day “Special, Breakfast in Bed is always a good start to a Mother’s usually Hectic Day– avoiding the accidental “spillage” of the said breakfast onto the bed: tea, coffee or orange juice or all  is probably best to be avoided, especially when younger.

I’m not suggesting that one “Shuns the Shops” but handmade or crafted gifts always appeal to a Mothers heart (as does a Gucci Purse or Handbag of course) and well, a Spa day treat is always a good bet… or a meal out where she (or husband) doesn’t have to cook.

But one thing is for sure – the restaurants will be full to the brim this Sunday Lunchtime as many Spanish (and I hope all good “European Children”), take their Mums out for Lunch.

As you can see, there really is no wrong way to celebrate Mother's day in Spain. In fact, enjoying this day on the Costa Blanca is, without doubt, an advantage and a unique occasion.
